Connecting IoT devices to the Internet is nothing new. Deploying and running real-time edge applications at hyper-scale on these devices is. Edge Computing is rapidly changing the IoT industry: making the world cyber-physical, making computing ubiquitous, and making cloud-native apps live their life on the edge forever unshackled from the confines of any datacenter. Edge Computing evolves Cloud Computing by keeping what's great about the Cloud model (developer-friendly APIs and Software-defined everything) yet applying it in the harsh physical and security environment of sensors and ruggedized industrial PCs. Edge Computing is young. It is roughly the same age that Cloud Computing was when Amazon introduced its first EC2 service. Back then, the entire IT industry was laughing at the quirky bookseller. 13 years later, nobody's laughing anymore (it is difficult to laugh when you're being eaten alive). Edge Computing is very likely going to be even more disruptive (did you know that the number of industrial PCs deployed by a single german vendor is larger than the total amount of servers in all of AWS datacenters combined?). Don't you wish you were jumping on the Cloud Computing bandwagon 13 years ago (and buying some Amazon stock while at it)?
In this talk, Roman will present a quick overview of the IoT, Cloud and Mobile computing industries and how their confluence gave raise to the Edge Computing paradigm. We will then touch upon the role of the Linux Foundation in rallying corporate and hobbyist open source communities around the Linux Foundation Edge Initiative. While several open source projects are being actively developed as part of LF Edge, one project, in particular, will remain in focus for the rest of this talk: Edge Virtualization Engine AKA Project EVE (because «rubbing some Kubernetes on the Edge» is just not going to cut it).
As one of the original architects and developers of Project EVE Roman will walk you through its goals, use cases and competitive landscape (and yes we will talk about Kubernetes at the Edge!). Finally, you will be invited on a whirlwind tour of EVE's design and implementation. You will learn how this novel, secure-by-design operating system enables the same DevOps culture that is now ubiquitous in the cloud and how it promises to change the developer velocity of the Edge.
